It’s that time of year when tradition beckons. You know the one. The end of year drive for tax-deductible donations.
As you may recall, last year was one of the busiest years in our 25-year history. We had our first international tour since the pandemic, bringing LULU XX to the Midsummer Scene Festival in Dubrovnik, Croatia for its international premiere. After three years of development, we had the world premiere of TRACES (after Sophie Calle) in Minneapolis, where it was presented by the Walker Art Center, one of the most important art centers in the US. HOME/LAND, a living installation, an intimate and participatory experience that speaks of identity and the ephemeral nature of all things that toured France and Portugal, including Avignon. We also continued our educational work through the Contemporary Performance Practices summer intensive.
After completing such rich work, 2025 was time to return to the lab to incubate new work - to research new ideas, workshop new material, and collaborate with new student-practitioners at CPP. This year, we began work on two exciting future productions:
_ORLANDO, a reflection on our complicated present through the lens of Virginia Woolf’s classic, radically re-imagined by our longtime associate, Damen Scranton from Los Angeles, slated for production in 2026/2027 season in New York
_Following two developmental residencies in Hvar, Croatia (2023) and London, UK (2024), we are now gearing towards the next collaborative phase for POLARIS, a collaborative physical/visual theatre work.
This year was also our fourth Contemporary Performance Practices intensive in Pula, Croatia. This year’s cohort featured a truly extraordinary group of students and practitioners diving deeply into their crafts, spending a week in classes with Ellen Lauren (SITI Company, NYC; Suzuki Company, Toga, Japan) and another week with Claudia De Serpa Soares (Sasha Waltz & Friends, Berlin). Ellen and Claudia offered two very different approaches to rigorous performance making that complemented each other and pushed participants to grow and collaborate in exciting ways. We are so proud of how this program has grown and are eagerly anticipating the next edition in July 2026.
To say that this is a perilous time for artists, especially in our homebase of the United States, is an understatement. As the future of the National Endowment for the Arts and other public funding remains caught up in the cross fire of a harshly divided government, we continue to create without apology. As the voice of artists and journalists are threatened by censorship, we continue to train artists to speak and create boldly.
