This year, we hit a major milestone -- we turned 20!
First of all, we want to express our deepest gratitude for believing in us and for supporting our work over the past twenty years
: thank you for making it possible to bring our dream projects to life and for the privilege for being able to share it with you and with audiences all over the world!
Our anniversary year was truly special. We taught and had creative residencies in Portland, Oregon; Hamilton, New York; Croatia and in the New York City. Along with an extraordinary international team of collaborators from Serbia, Cyprus, Australia (and the United States, of course) we revisited the Erika and Ivan’s very first WaxFactory collaboration to stage LULU XX
, which ran to outstanding reviews at the iconic Connelly Theater
in Manhattan in September. Jonathan Kalb of TheaterMatters
called the show “visually stunning… LULU XX is one of the most complex and intelligent solutions to Lulu I’ve seen”,
referred to the show as “a benchmark for what theater can and should be.”
And, The Reviews Hub called it a “stunning work with a strong feminist backbone...undeniably well-executed...unafraid of settling into darkness and silence so often eschewed in live performance.”
Shortly afterwards, Hidden Stories
, the innovative site-specific performance directed by Erika in collaboration with our sister company, Begat Theater (France) toured the United States, including sold-out performances at BOOM Arts (Portland, OR,) La Jolla Playhouse’s WOW Festival (San Diego, CA,) and Brooklyn Falls for France (New York City.) And, this past summer, Ivan successfully launched Contemporary Performance Practices
, a summer performance training program in Croatia, in partnership with CCA/Creative Cultural Alliance.
As we enter our third decade as a company, we invite you to join us in dreaming up ambitious plans for the coming year -- which include touring our 2019 productions internationally, publishing a book documenting our first 20 years as a company, launching the 2020 edition of Contemporary Performance Practices
and developing new work for the 20/21 season. None of this would be possible without your continued support!
Small, independent, hard-to-box-in groups such as WaxFactory are particularly vulnerable in the current socio-economic climate as institutional supporters increasingly favor commercial mainstream work. With that tidal shift, more than ever, our livelihood relies on the generosity of our loyal supporters. Thanks to donors like you, we have experienced steady growth in our individual giving in the last six years, with gratitude. But in order to continue producing innovative, ambitious multidisciplinary work, we must double up on our efforts, with your help.
As you contemplate your options for end-of-the-year giving, we kindly ask you to consider renewing your support for WaxFactory.
Each donation we receive will be fully tax-deductible. This year, we will also send a special surprise gift (curated by us!) to everyone donating above the $100 mark.
THANK YOU for your attention and unflagging support! With best wishes for the holiday season -- we looking forward to staying in touch,
